The Banana River/ Sykes Creek Water Quality Retrofit Project is located on northeast Merritt Island. Baffle boxes will be installed in neighborhood drainage systems that serve the largest areas. Many neighborhoods developed in the 1960s featured canals which discharge into the Banana River or the Ulu May Sanctuary. The baffle boxes will remove pollutants from the exiisting drainage systems rior to discharge to open waters. This project will be partially funded (up to 40%) by a US EPA 319 Grant through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Total cost $502,000. The project is currently in the final design stage. In April 2008 it will be put out to bid. Outreach to the neighborhood will begin in February and construction will begin in late May and is expected to be complete by October 2008.
