This project will provide enhanced flood protection, improve water quality and enhance the health of an existing wetland throughout the North Merritt Island area. The project will divert runoff from a 629-acre watershed through an already constructed treatment pond and an existing borrow pit. The use of the borrow pit will pretreat the runoff prior to descharge into wetlands adjacent to King's Park. Additional treatment will occur within the wetlands prior to discharge to the Indian River Lagoon. The project as currently planned will eliminate use of King's Lake for stormwater treatment. A previous expenditure of $350,000 has been made as part of a Board approved Joint Participation Agreement resulting in County ownership of a 20-acre treatment pond augmenting this project. A $150,000 DEP grant and $200,000 SJRWMD grant will help to fund the project. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2009 and be completed in 2010.
