Storm Drain MarkersIt is important to keep in mind that nearly everything that washes downa storm drain ends up in either the Indian River Lagoonor the St. Johns River.Pollutants from automobiles, fertilizers, pesticides, sediment, andhazardous wastes are carried to the Indian River Lagoonthrough stormwater runoff. The negative impact on the marineenvironment threatens the health of the Indian River Lagoon.By following simple, common sense healthy habits, we can allhelp to decrease the discharge of pollutants to our local water bodies.
Automobiles leave traces of oil, gas and rubber on pavement.
Silt from eroded shorelines is washed into water bodies. It is vital to keep drain inlets clean to help protect yourneighborhood from flooding. If trash, grass clippings, branches,or litter clog the drains, they create localized flooding problems.NEVER dump or place anything down your storm drain except water.
In an effort to raise awareness regarding the IMPORTANCE to keepingpollutants out of storm drains, a storm drain-marking programhas been implemented by the municipalities, Brevard Countyand St. Johns River Water Management District. The Watershed ManagementProgram continues to organize volunteers to install storm drainmarkers in unincorporated areas of Brevard County, West Melbourneand Malabar. If you are interested in having the educational marker (below)installedin your neighborhood, call Elizabeth Melvin at 633-2016, ext. 56721!
Keep your eyes peeled for these colorful markers on a storm drain near you!
